Interview with Dr. Sibel Irmak

What are your strengths?

Having strong ambitions to do research.

What are your goals?

To be well-known and respected scientist in my discipline.

Where do you want to be in next 5 years time?

Promotion to full professor and continue to work on scientific projects,be role model for young generation candidates who will become future scientists, researchers.

What 3 positive words would your colleagues/friends say about you?

Handworker, positive, courteous

What & who motivates you?

I love science and everything related to science motivates me. My role model who motivated me to be scientist is my PhD advisor, Prof. Dr. Oktay Erbatur.

How do you handle pressure/stress?

Try to do completely different thing than the thing that caused stress/pressure on me but this is just for that time. I don’t escape from it. I strongly try to find a way to solve the problem that caused stress on me.

What do you like to do outside of work?

Spending time with family/friends, travelling, reading, cooking.

What’s unique about you?

I am always hopeful and positive.

Tell me about how a professional qualification you have obtained has helped you personally?

I become more patient and productive by dealing with many things at the same time. 

How do you resolve conflict in the groups or teams that you are a part of?

I accept people are not same. They may be good in different ways but they do not match with each others. They can conflict with somethings. The best way is to find a middle way that partially works for everyone. This can be accomplished by talking and discussion.

Tell me about a time when you changed your priorities to meet others’ expectations?

When I had a kid.

Tell me about a difficult decision that you have made?

Leaving my country, family, friends, etc.  for science/career.

Tell me about a time when you were able to change someone’s view point significantly?

Insisting on that he/she could be successful if works patiently. 

May I know about your research students? How many members awarded with the degree PhD/M.Phil?

2 PhDs  and 4 masters.

By considering all of your research students, who is the best researcher you would like us to know?

Bahar Meryemoglu.

What is the greatest work done by your research students which have shown greatest impact in that field?

Hydrogen gas production from biomass.

Which stage of education for a child is important?

Education starts from first months you born and until your brain stops thinking properly. Every life experience educates you on something and develops your professionalism.

Does one education system suit for all set of students across the world?

No

What is effect of technology on students?

If it is used properly it is very useful and unique way to learn.
