India is a one of the fastest developing countries in the world but still illiteracy is a biggest problem in India. Here women education plays a vital role in the development of society because they constitute the half (even more than half) of the population of the society. Recently, Indian women & girls are showing greatest importance to higher education when compared to the past years.   

For supporting their endeavors, Indian Government as well as institution(s) come(s) forward to offer various scholarships and/or fellowships to the women. This step may be a one of the effective ways of women and/or girls empowerment in India. These scholarship or fellowship programmes will support the women and/or girls for various kinds of educational needs. In this article, I have discussed various types of scholarships or fellowships available to the Indian women and girls.      

1. AICTE Pragati Scholarship Scheme

Objective: This scholarship provides the financial support for the Technical Education of girl students enrolled in the AICTE approved Technical colleges/institutions for pursuing the course.  

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Scholarship

  • Tuition fee up to ₹ 30,000.
  • Monthly stipend of ₹ 2,000 is paid for 10 months.

Total Number of Scholarships: 4000

Eligibility Criteria

  • First year girl students of degree or diploma course and institution/college must be approved by AICTE.
  • Maximum 2 girls allowed per each family.
  • The annual family income should not be more than  8,00,000 per annum.
  • Reservation: Seats reserved for OBC-27%; for SC-15% and ST-7.5%.

Notification Date: Applications are invited in the month of October/ November.

2. Begum Hazrat Mahal Scholarship Scheme

Objective: To support the education of meritorious girl students who belongs to the national minority communities. 

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Scholarship

  • For Class 9th and 10th: Tuition fee payable up to ₹ 10,000 in 2 installments of ₹ 5,000.
  • For Class 11th and 12th: Tuition fee payable up to ₹ 12,000 in 2 installments of ₹ 6,000.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Girl students belonging to any of the 6 minority communities, namely: Christian, Sikh, Muslim, Parsis, Jains, and Buddhists.
  • They should have a minimum score of 50% marks in the previous class examinations.
  • Class 9th to Class 12th students are eligible to this scholarship.
  • The annual family income of the applicant should not exceed  2,00,000 per annum.

Application Process

  • Applicants should fill the online application form available in the web portal of Maulana Azad Education Foundation Scholarship (MAEF) i.e. www.maef.nic.in. After applying, printed application form should reach the MAEF office.

Notification Date: Applications are invited in October/ November.

CBSE Single Girl Child Scholarship scheme

Objective: To support the financial needs for education of girl student who must be a single child of their parents and must be passed in 10th class examinations.

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Scholarship

Selected candidates will get paid with ₹ 500 on monthly basis for 2 years and enhancement in the school tuition must not be more than 10%.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants should have passed Class 10th with a minimum aggregate of 60% marks or should have a CGPA of 6.2.
  • They should have taken admission in the Class 11th of a CBSE recognized schools and where tuition fee should not be more than ₹1,500.

3. Swami Vivekananda Single Girl Child Scholarship Scheme (Research Fellowship)

Objective: Swami Vivekananda was committed to the women’s education. Keeping his ideology, the government of India has started Swami Vivekananda Single Girl Child Scholarship Scheme to support the higher education of girl who is the single child of her parents.

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Scholarship

  • Selected applicants will get ₹ 25,000/month for the initial 2 years as JRF (Junior Research Fellow) and 28,000/month for further 3 years, if they promoted as a SRF SRF (Senior Research Fellow).
  • They also eligible to receive a contingency grant of ₹ 10,000 annually for initial 2 years and ₹ 20,500 grant for rest of the 3 years.
  • An additional amount of ₹ 2,000 is also given for reader/escort assistance.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant should be the single girl child of her family.
  • She should have taken admission in the Ph. D program in Social Science research in any Indian college/university.

4. Lady  Meherbai D. Tata Education Trust Scholarship Scheme

Objective: this scholarship is offered by the Tata Trust and it gives financial support to the women applicants who wish to study in abroad.

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Scholarship

Amount/scholarship is adjustable based on the tuition fee of abroad university.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant must be originated from India.
  • She must have good educational profile and must be invited for admission from universities located in UK, USA, or Europe.

Application Process

Notification Date: March/ April.

5. Postdoctoral Fellowship for Women

Objective: This fellowship offered to unemployed doctoral women.

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Fellowship

  • ₹ 38,800 for first 2 years and then ₹ 46,500 for further 3 years on monthly basis.
  • Contingency grant up to ₹ 50,000 annually will be paid for during fellowship validity.
  • Reader/escort assistance of ₹ 2,000/month.

Duration of Fellowship: 5 years.

Total Number of Fellowships: 100.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Women applicant must have the PhD degree obtained from recognized university.
  • Age should not be more than 55 years.
  • Reservation: Age relaxation of 5 years applicable for SC/ST/OBC/PwD.

6. CBSE Udaan

Objective: This scholarship is especially offered for meritorious girl students who are preparing for competitive entrance examinations.

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Scheme

  • His covers all miscellaneous expenses to attend the coaching classes and expense like tuition fee, admission fee etc.
  • Applicant must show 75% attendance to Udaan Classes.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Indian girl students studying 11th or 12th Class in PCM stream of Kendriya Vidyalaya / Navodaya Vidyalaya / any government run school affiliated to any Central/ State board.
  • Applicant must be obtained aggregate score of minimum 70% marks in 10th Class but not less than 80% marks in the Science and Mathematics subjects and must have 8 & 9 in science & mathematics subjects on CGPA scale.
  • Annual family income should not more than ₹ 6,00,000/annum.

7. Women Scientist Scheme

Objective: For encouraging the Indian women who have break in their career because of family and children responsibilities and this fellowship is offered byThe Department of Science and Technology (DST).

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Scheme

This scheme was divided into 3 categories.

Women Scientist(s) in ‘Group A’: Women applicants who have obtained the PhD or equivalent in basic sciences can get ₹ 55,000/month for duration of 3 years on submission of a project proposal and project cost should not be more than ₹ 30,00,000.

Women Scientist in ‘Group B’:

  • Women applicants who have obtained the M. Sc., M. Pharmacy, M.Tech, M. Phil or equivalent can get ₹40,000/month for a period of 3 years on submission of project proposal and total cost of the project should not be more than ₹25,00,000.
  • Women applicants who obtained the M. Sc/B. Sc/MBBS/B. Tech or equivalent in basic or applied sciences can get ₹30,000 on the monthly basis and the total cost of the project should not be more than ₹20,00,000.

 Women Scientist in ‘Group C’:

  • Women applicants who have obtained the Ph.D or equivalent in basic sciences can get ₹30,000/month for a period of 3 years on submission of project proposal.
  • Applicants with M.Sc/ M.Pharmacy/M.Tech/M.Phil or equivalent degrees can get ₹ 25,000/month.
  • Students with M.Sc./B.Tech/MBBS or equivalent degrees can get ₹ 20,000/month.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be unemployed women from Indian origin.
  • Age limit: 27 – 57 years.
  • Women Scientist Scheme ‘A’: Scholarships can be availed in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Life Sciences, and Engineering and Technology fields. 
  • Women Scientist Scheme ‘B’: Scholarships can be availed for a research proposal related to the theme ‘Bringing development at the grass-root level through technology’.
  • Women Scientist Scheme ‘C’: Scholarship is given to women applicants in the form of training and recruitment in the field of IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) for record keeping, filing and maintenance works.

8. Kalpana Chawla Memorial Award

Objective: This award scholarship was initiated by the Biyani Girls College in 2005 and it supports meritorious girl students wishing to pursue technical education.

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Award

This award scholarship has been divided into 4 categories among the winners and each category consists of 21 winners.

Category-I (1st Prize): In this category, students (21 members) have an opportunity to attend the NASA camp.

Category-II (2nd Prize): In this category, students (21 members) can get a cash prize of ₹ 1,00,000.

Category-III (3rd Prize): In this category, students (21 members) will receive a cash prize of ₹ 50,000.

Category-IV (4th Prize): In this category, students (21 members) will receive a consolation prize of ₹ 21,000.

Total number of winners will be selected for this award: 84.

Eligibility Criteria

Girl students studying 12th class are eligible to apply for this award.

9. Kiran Girls Scholarship Scheme

Objective: Offers financial support to girl students pursuing B.E/B.Tech in IT and Computer Science, or ENTC from the engineering colleges in located in Pune, Nagpur, Goa or Hyderabad.

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Scholarship

  • Selected applicants will receive an annual scholarship of ₹ 40,000 and availed till the completion of the engineering course.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be qualified in 10th class with minimum of 60% marks and should be enrolled in the B.E/B.Tech course of colleges located in the Pune, Nagpur, Goa or Hyderabad.
  • Annual family income should not be more than ₹ 3,50,000.

Total Number of Scholarships: 10

Application Process

  • Interested candidates should apply through the www.persistentfoundation.org and also can check for other information like exam pattern etc. 

Notification Date: Usually 31st January.

10. Overseas Women Scholarships

10.1. Grace Hopper scholarship

Objective: It offers financial support to graduate and undergraduate girl students enrolled in the courses of Computer Science, MIS, Mathematics, Physics, IT, Human-computer interaction and Electrical Engineering.

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Scholarship

  • It offers Air-fares and accommodation charges etc (Travel stipend) to attend the conferences in Computer Science.

Total Number of Scholarships: 657 (girl students) & 22 (faculty members).

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant must be a student of graduate or postgraduate courses (above said courses) and should be at least 18 years of age while attending to the conferences.

Application Process

Notification Date: January and closed by the first week of March.

10.2. Google Anita Borg Scholarship

Objective: To bring the gender equality in the technology field and this scholarship renamed as Google Women Tech-makers program. This scheme gives an opportunity to women candidates to participate in computer science and computing programme.

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Scholarship

  • Selected applicant can get around $10,000 to pursue further studies.
  • They also can attend the Google Annual Retreat programme held in the Mountain View, California.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Female applicant should be enrolled in the computer science or computing engineering or related undergraduate programme in the USA University.
  • GPA score of at least 3.5 out of 4.

10.3. Adobe India Women in Technology Scholarship

Objective: As like google program, this scholarship also aims to bring thegender equality in the technology field.

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Scholarship

  • Pays tuition fee for the B.Tech/integrated M.Tech course.
  • Free entry to Grace Hopper conference.
  • Can attend for training at the Adobe India.
  • Chance to get collaborated and become a mentor at the BTP (Bachelor of Technology Project).
  • Get felicitated at all India award felicitation programme. 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Female applicants enrolled at any Indian University in the B.Tech or M.Tech integrated programme.

Application Process

10.4. Women Scholarship for Peace-Global South

Objective: To establish peace and solving other developmental related issues and it is offered by UN Office.

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Scholarship

  • It covers tuition-fee, travel charges, accommodation and other miscellaneous charges for the training.
  • Awarded with UPEACE certificate issued by the UN-mandated University of Peace

Total Number of scholarships: 140.

Eligibility Criteria

Early career women are encouraged to join this training programme.

11. Famous Private Scholarships for Women

11.1. Santoor Scholarship

Objective: Wipro offers Santoor scholarships to girl students from the states of Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh to pursue higher education.

Amount payable/Benefits under this Scholarship

  • Women applicants who enrolled in professional course (degree/diploma course) after 12th class are eligible.
  • Studying in metropolitan city gets ₹ 36,000 tuition-fee annually and non-metropolitan cities can get ₹ 24,000.
  • The total number of the scholarships is 300.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Women applicant who enrolled in diploma or degree courses after either 10th or 12th from government school/college.
  • 60% of the scholarships are reserved for Liberal Arts, Humanities and Science students. Remaining 40% scholarships are reserved for technical students.

Application Process

Notification Date: End of the August.

11.2. Tata Housing Scholarship for Meritorious Girls

Objective: it offers financial support to the meritorious girls enrolled in the Civil Engineering, Architecture or Construction Management courses.

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Scholarship

  • Selected students can get a tuition fee of ₹ 60,000 annually up to completion of the entire course.  
  • Student should score 60% marks every year to get scholarship benefits for entire course.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Second year women/girl students of the Civil Engineering/Architecture or Construction Management courses and score of 50% marks in the 1st year examinations.
  • Must have 50% marks in the graduating years for the students of 2 years full-time MBA programme.

Application Process

Notification Date: November/December.

11.3. Fair and Lovely Foundation for Higher Education for Women Scholarship

Objective: To encourage the girl/women students to get enrolled for Undergraduate or Postgraduate courses.

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Scholarship

  • Can get ₹ 25,000 to ₹ 40,000 and who belongs to rural area can get additional amount of ₹ 3,000.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Age must be between 15-30 years for general/BC/OBC and 2 years additional relaxation for SC/ST girl students.

Application Process

Notification Date: January and closed by February.

11.4. Prabha Dutt Fellowship

Objective: This fellowship is especially for women print journalists.

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Fellowship

  • ₹ 1,00,000 will be offered to selected candidates to pursue research in the women related subjects of contemporary relevance and duration of fellowship is 10 months.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Age: 25-40 years and should be a print journalist.

Application Process

  • Enthusiastic candidates should submit an updated CV, project proposal (205-300), 5 Published papers along with the application and send via email: fellowships@sanskritifoundation.org.

11.5. L’Oreal Scholarship for Young Women in Science

Objective: To encourage the participation of women in the Science and Technology field.

Amount Payable/Benefits under this scheme

  • ₹ 2,50,000  payable for their tuition fee and other education related expenses.
  • Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicant should have passed 12th class in the Science stream (either PCM/ PCB) with 85% and pursuing Undergraduate programme in Engineering, Science, Biotechnology or Medicine.

11.6. Clinic Plus scholarship

Objective: Supporting the mothers to fulfill their daughter’s dreams.

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Scholarship

Offers ₹ 1,00,000.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Indian girl students studying 5th class to Class 12th.
  • Minimum aggregate score of 90% marks with active involvement in at least 1 curriculum activity/minimum score of 80% marks with active involvement in at least 2 curricular activities/minimum score of 70% with active involvement in at least 3 curricular activities/minimum score of 60% with active involvement in at least 4 curricular activities.

11.7. Internshala Career Scholarship for Girls

Objective: To offer financial support to the girl students who wish to pursue in any field of their dream.

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Scholarship: ₹ 25,000 annually.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Girl student with 17 to 23 years of age.

11.8. Avasar Scholarship

Objective: Supporting the meritorious girls who have discontinued because of life situations and is offered by the ‘Opportunity Trust Organization’.

Amount Payable/Benefits under this Scholarship

Applicable 6 years after matriculation.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant with 80% of marks in the 9th class and domiciled in Mumbai, Bangalore, and Gurgaon.
